Toshiba’s origins trace back to 1875 when Hisashige Tanaka, a Japanese inventor, founded Tanaka Engineering Works, which would later become one of the most influential companies in Japan. In 1939, Tanaka’s company merged with Tokyo Electric Company, forming Tokyo Shibaura Electric Company. In 1978, the company was renamed Toshiba Corporation.
